Forbes: Most of Bungie Unaware of Destiny 2 Support Termination
The decision to cease active support for Destiny 2 came as a surprise not only to players.
Bungie's recent announcement to cease active support for Destiny 2 after the final update on June 9, 2026, shocked not only the gaming community but also the developers themselves.
According to journalist Paul Tassi's investigation for Forbes, the vast majority of Bungie employees learned about the project's closure at the same time as players — from the public announcement. Only a handful of executives and teams, who had already been transferred to support the recently released extraction shooter Marathon, knew about the impending decision.
According to Forbes' sources, the board of directors decided to scrap Destiny 2 earlier this year. However, ordinary developers were kept in the dark: they continued to work on future content updates, including the massive expansion The Shattered Cycle, which has now been completely canceled. The publication's interlocutors claim that the few managers who were privy to the plans in advance literally "begged" the leadership to reveal the truth to their colleagues, but the studio bosses preferred to maintain complete secrecy.
The situation is exacerbated by a Bloomberg publication, according to which Bungie is preparing a new wave of massive layoffs, and the development of a hypothetical Destiny 3 is not even planned. During an emergency general meeting after the announcement, employees directly asked management about upcoming cuts, but received no clear answer.
Meanwhile, devoted fans of the universe have collected over 200,000 signatures in a petition to Sony within a few days, demanding the production of a full-fledged Destiny sequel.
