Box Office Disaster: "The Mandalorian & Grogu" Loses to YouTube Horrors and Risks Not Breaking Even
The new full-length film in the "Star Wars" universe shows the worst dynamics in the franchise's history.
The new full-length film in the "Star Wars" universe faces the threat of financial fiasco. Amidst the dominance of horror films "Backrooms Reality" and "Obsession" in the American box office, which grossed $90 million and $30 million respectively, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" shows a catastrophic decline.
According to preliminary estimates, the film will earn about $23 million in its second domestic weekend after an opening of $80 million. This means a record 72% drop in box office revenue.
For a project with a production budget of $165 million, such dynamics practically mean an early end to a successful run. Industry experts expected the film's break-even point to be around $400 million, but current trends cast doubt on whether the film will even cross the $300 million mark by the end of its theatrical run.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that "Masters of the Universe" suddenly announced an IMAX release, which will cause "The Mandalorian & Grogu" to lose its premium screens in its third week.
Of course, Disney is counting on additional profits from merchandise sales, theme park attractions, and subsequent streaming release, but the current dynamics call into question the further development of the universe beyond Disney+.
