The fantasy action film about the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu concluded its opening weekend with mixed results. The film topped the charts but set a new historical anti-record for the franchise.

Over the long holiday weekend, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" earned $165 million worldwide. Of this amount, $102 million came from the US, and the remaining $63 million from international markets. Although these figures met the upper end of analysts' forecasts and placed the film at the top of the American box office, this result officially became the worst opening for any film in the space saga from Disney.

The new release lagged behind even the 2018 film "Solo: A Star Wars Story," which was considered the brand's biggest box office flop. Over the standard three-day weekend, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" collected only $81.9 million compared to "Solo's" $84.4 million.

The gap persisted in the four-day holiday tally: $102 million versus $103 million for the smuggler spin-off, and "Solo's" worldwide gross for those days was even higher at $171 million.

Without adjusting for inflation, the Mandalorian film also failed to break into the top 10 best Memorial Day openings in the US, taking only 12th place and falling behind last year's remake of "Lilo & Stitch."

The situation is somewhat mitigated by the modest budget. The production of "The Mandalorian & Grogu" cost approximately $165 million, excluding marketing – almost half the cost of many recent films in the universe. To break even, the film needs to surpass approximately $412 million in worldwide box office. Given the high ratings from general audiences, the project will likely achieve this goal.
