"Sick Mutant of Pop Culture" or "Thrilling Adventure": First Reviews for "The Mandalorian & Grogu" Film Emerge
Critics met the new adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu without much enthusiasm.
Full reviews for "The Mandalorian & Grogu" have appeared online – the first full-length "Star Wars" film since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019. At the time of publication, the film received 63% "freshness" on Rotten Tomatoes after 68 reviews and a score of 54 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 33 reviews.
Most critics agree that Jon Favreau's film works as a continuation of "The Mandalorian" series, but opinions diverge on the nuances. Some authors describe the film as a light and dynamic adventure with good action, a charismatic duo of Din Djarin and Grogu, and strong music by Ludwig Göransson.
For others, the same feature became the main disappointment. Even in benevolent reviews, authors admit that many expected a greater scale from the first full-length "Star Wars" film in seven years. Instead, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" is often described as an expensive and drawn-out Disney+ episode that would have been more comfortable on streaming than in cinemas.
Variety calls the film a couple of cute, entertaining, and quickly forgettable episodes stitched together. IndieWire describes the film as "harmless and inessential", and SlashFilm notes that "Star Wars has never felt so boring and mundane."
The lowest rating, 1 out of 5, was given by Kevin Maher from the British publication The Times. He called the film "a sick mutant of pop culture, unrecognizable from the cheerful fairy tale George Lucas introduced to the world in 1977", and asked to "put Star Wars out of its misery."
The world premiere of "The Mandalorian & Grogu" will take place on May 22.
