In the third season of "House of the Dragon," Rhaenyra Targaryen will appear in a new light. Showrunner Ryan Condal stated that the heroine will undergo another stage of evolution after her journey from rebellious princess to a woman broken by grief.
According to showrunner Ryan Condal, constant changes in characters are the main "highlight" of the series. He explained his approach using the example of an iconic character from the original show:
"I think that's what 'Game of Thrones' did so well — your understanding of who a character is. Jaime Lannister throwing Bran out the window is radically different from the Jaime you see in the middle of the series when he's lost his hand and is running around with Brienne."
Condal noted that characters should not remain static, otherwise they become uninteresting to watch.
"With our main characters, with whom we spend a lot of time, the viewer experiences similar situations. Who a character is at any given moment doesn't mean they'll stay that way forever — that would be boring. We tried to subject them to various trials, exert external pressure from the plot and environment, and then see where it leads. And Rhaenyra is a prime example of that."
Rhaenyra's actress Emma D'Arcy previously hinted that in the new episodes her character will become more "active." If in the second season she still tried to rule through consensus and seek peaceful solutions, following the lessons of her late father, King Viserys, now circumstances will change. Condal also noted that in the third season, Rhaenyra will have to experience an important turning point:
"There comes a point where she has to make a moral compromise for her family, for herself, and for her rights to the throne. And this is where the idea of predestination and all those grand concepts that we play with in epic fantasy begin to work."
The premiere of the third season of "House of the Dragon" will take place on HBO Max on June 21, 2026.
