In June, a major expansion, Nomads, was released for the global space strategy game Stellaris. The key feature of this DLC is the "nomadic empires" mechanic.
Players can create states that are not interested in conquering star systems and colonizing worlds – instead, they will wander on a giant ark ship, which will serve as their main settlement.
The developers describe the ark ship as a capital, a cradle of civilization, and a fortress:
This marvel of engineering can and should be constantly improved, as it will replace worlds for your state. Choose a ship from one of three classes – it will reflect your government's views.
In addition, the Nomads expansion for Stellaris includes several new origins, the "Galactic Defender" ambition, and the "Star Cannon" – a megastructure available in the late game that will allow players to "concentrate all of the empire's energy reserves into a devastating beam that can strike enemy systems across the galaxy."
Previously, the Stellaris game director mentioned in a dev diary that developers had said for "years" that it was impossible to create moving planets, and the mere mention of this feature literally made programmers cry. However, after many years, they finally found a way to implement it.
