Stellaris Programmers Cried for Years at the Mention of a Mechanic Coming Soon in the Nomads Expansion
For many years, developers were sure that "moving planets" were simply impossible to create.
The game director of the global space strategy Stellaris recently presented a new dev diary. In it, he talked about the upcoming DLC Nomads and mentioned a mechanic that for years instilled terror in the Paradox Development Studio development team:
For years we said that moving planets were "impossible to do." For years you were told that even mentioning it would make programmers cry. We love doing the impossible, and it seems we also enjoy bringing our programmers to tears. Despite the carpets having to be changed twice due to flooding, colonies were separated from planets! (This will break your mods)
However, this gameplay mechanic will soon become a reality — in the Nomads expansion, the creators of Stellaris will offer players to move away from familiar star systems and lead a nomadic empire:
The galaxy is not a trophy mountain to conquer, but a path for you to travel. With the Stellaris: Nomads expansion, you can survive in the void only by staying in constant motion. The great empires of the galaxy squabble over lines on maps, but your civilization sees things differently. It has grasped an important truth: life flourishes in movement.
Stellaris will introduce the Ark Ship, which can replace worlds for the player:
The capital, the cradle of civilization, and a fortress. This marvel of engineering can and should be constantly improved, as it will replace worlds for your state. Choose a ship of one of three classes — it will reflect the views of your government.
The release of the Nomads expansion for Stellaris is scheduled for June 15, 2026. It is part of the game's "Season 10" support.
