Screenwriter of "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" Revealed an Alternative Anime Ending
The ending of the anime "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" broke many fans' hearts, but it turns out David Martinez could have faced an even more terrible fate.
In an interview with Anime Corner, lead screenwriter Bartosz Sztybor revealed that during early development, the team discussed an alternative ending, which he himself considers a true "fate worse than death":
"We had an ending option where David doesn't completely die. The megacorporation Arasaka takes what's left of him, subjugates him, and turns him into a soulless combat robot. In this form, he is sent to fight in Africa or South America as part of ongoing corporate wars."
Ultimately, this idea was not included in the final version of the anime. Such a turn of events would have seemed even more hopeless than the canonical ending: instead of death, David would forever lose his own personality and freedom, turning into a faceless weapon of the corporation he fought against his entire life.
Meanwhile, the franchise is already preparing for its return. The second season of "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is already in active production. A full trailer for the sequel will be shown on June 29, and then the creators will talk more about the project at a panel during Anime Expo in July.
