Players Criticize Visual Recoil in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
Infinity Ward promised to listen to feedback.
Infinity Ward has responded to community concerns regarding visual weapon recoil in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Following the release of a new developer diary episode, "From the Ward," many fans expressed concern that the game might repeat one of Modern Warfare 2 (2022)'s most controversial features.
In the new video, the studio detailed its approach to creating the shooter. According to weapon designer Cody Pearson, the main goal of Modern Warfare 4 is to make the gameplay as immersive as possible, so that the player feels directly behind their operative's weapon.
To achieve this, the developers have implemented a number of new solutions. These include more realistic depth of field, redesigned muzzle flash effects with reduced smoke obscuring vision, and dynamic weapon positioning: the character will automatically lower the barrel near obstacles or change its position when peeking around corners.
However, it was the shooting demonstration that sparked a wave of criticism. Many users noted that the strong visual recoil, weapon sway, and smoke effects are reminiscent of Modern Warfare 2, which had previously been repeatedly criticized for poor image readability during firefights.
In response to player comments, Infinity Ward issued an official statement:
We've seen the early discussions about visual recoil. The beta test will give players the opportunity to evaluate the game for themselves, and we will closely monitor feedback throughout both testing phases.
