Originality Was Not Enough: Feige Compares "Fantastic Four" to New "Spider-Man"

The head of Marvel admitted that an unusual visual style is not enough to attract a wide audience.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige commented on the modest results of "Fantastic Four: First Steps" and compared the film to the much more successful "Spider-Man: A New Day." According to the producer, the desire to stand out among other superhero blockbusters is not enough – the story must first and foremost resonate emotionally with viewers.

Feige addressed this topic during a discussion about possible audience fatigue with similar films. As an example, he cited "First Steps," which received a separate universe and a retro-futuristic aesthetic inspired by 1960s visions of the future, but ended its worldwide run with $521 million.

"A few things can be true at once. I think last year's 'Fantastic Four' looked and sounded unlike any other superhero movie, but it only made $521 million. 'A New Day' is a completely overt fourth installment. It picks up shortly after the events of 'No Way Home,' but it tells a story that resonates with audiences."

"Spider-Man: A New Day," meanwhile, crossed the billion-dollar mark in just six days and set several local and global records. One of the reasons the story resonated with audiences, Feige believes, is the theme of loneliness, which is especially relevant for modern viewers:

"Ultimately, it's a story about loneliness and the dangers of living in isolation, when we're alone in our apartments looking at our phones. That resonates across cultures around the world right now."
