Classic Golden Axe Transformed into a Metacomedy - First Animated Series Trailer

The heroes will once again set out to slay Death Adder, who simply refuses to stay dead.

Paramount+ has released the first trailer for the animated series based on Golden Axe, SEGA's classic fantasy action series. The adaptation reinterprets the original 1989 game as a metacomedy. Barbarian Ax Battler, Amazon Tyris Flare, and dwarf Gilius Thunderhead will reunite to save the land of Yuria from Death Adder – the wielder of the Golden Axe, who has returned to life after yet another defeat.

Ax Battler is voiced by Liam McIntyre ("Spartacus: Blood and Sand"), Gilius Thunderhead by Matthew Rhys ("The Americans"), Tyris Flare by Lisa Gilroy, and Chronos by Carl Tart. A new hero, Hampton Squibb, joins the familiar trio; he has always dreamed of being an adventurer but found himself completely unprepared for real feats. He is voiced by Danny Pudi from "Community."

The animated series was created by Mike McMahan ("Star Trek: Lower Decks," "Solar Opposites") and Joe Chandler ("American Dad!"). Together, they wrote the first episode, and Chandler also serves as showrunner.

Golden Axe will premiere on September 16, 2026, exclusively on Paramount+.
