In Zach Cregger's new "Resident Evil," Austin Abrams' character has to run a lot, but the actor deliberately refused to train before filming. Good physical shape, in his opinion, would only harm the image of an ordinary medical courier who was never prepared for long chases and the struggle for survival:
"I wanted it to be clear: this person can't run. It's more interesting to watch him gasp for breath, and the audience thinks: 'I'm not sure he'll even make it.'"
For the same reason, Abrams did not rehearse some scenes in advance, to maintain a natural reaction and not think about how effective he looked or sounded on screen:
"You have to let go of all inhibitions, stop trying to look or sound cool, and just let the scream out. It's better not to know what will happen beforehand."
Filming took place in winter in Prague and was a physical challenge for the actor himself. On some days, freezing rain froze directly on his clothes, and some scenes on the farm were filmed during a real snowfall. Abrams decided to use the cold and discomfort in his work on the character, as they helped him convey Brian's helplessness.
