Phantom Blade Zero will not feature respawning enemies - developers want to make every battle unique

The developers of the action RPG Phantom Blade Zero have decided to abandon one of the familiar mechanics of soulslikes — the reappearance of defeated enemies. According to the creators, this will make every encounter with enemies more memorable, and also focus players' attention on the plot and exploration of the game world.

This was stated by game director Cowei “Soulframe” Liang in an interview with the Japanese publication 4Gamer. According to him, the team strives to ensure that every element of the game has value and players do not have to go through the same content again and again.

I want everything in the game to have value. I don't want players to encounter the same content over and over again. Another reason is the desire to focus on the development of the story and the game world itself.

Liang also noted that encountering a new opponent is one of the most important elements of the combat system, allowing players to be surprised. The constant return of already defeated enemies could deprive such encounters of their initial effect. At the same time, Liang admits that the absence of respawning enemies may shorten the playthrough duration.

In many games, enemies respawn, including so that players can collect materials again or receive certain rewards. But we are confident in the volume and quality of our game. Therefore, we always want players to encounter something new.
