Real-time strategies will not regain their former popularity, but may occupy an important niche — director of the new Dawn of War
Not long ago, real-time strategies were one of the most popular genres, regularly receiving high-quality new releases. Today, the genre has become niche, with a limited number of new releases, but the developers of Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4 do not see this as a problem.
According to Jan Theysen, creative director of King Art Games, RTS are unlikely to ever regain their former popularity, but still remain a large niche with an active community. This is especially true for strategies based on well-known franchises such as Warhammer.
«I am sure that RTS will no longer be a leading genre. It's a niche, but a big one. There are always RTS fans looking for new games, as well as Warhammer fans, the 40k version and the Dawn of War series».
«Especially with the growing interest in Space Marines and the upcoming series with Henry Cavill. We are creating a game for both of these audiences. There is no need to compete with shooters for popularity, and there is no problem with that».
Designer Elliot Verbeyst notes that each of the four campaigns in the main game is larger than the entire campaign of the original Dawn of War. The studio has hired more employees while maintaining the flexibility and creativity of an independent team.
«We can give RTS fans the depth and complexity that a small team would not be able to achieve».
