An important part of the game is the musical accompaniment.
Recently, the composers of Red Recon 1944 (or "Reconnaissance: 1944") Daniil Tsovin and Ivan Yarchevsky talked about how the work on music for the game is arranged:
The main difference is time. In cinema, everything is rigidly tied to editing, to a specific second. You know that in five seconds there will be a dramatic moment, and in a couple of minutes - tense action. In the game, you can't predict the player's actions, if we are not talking about cut-scenes or staged rail moments. Therefore, the music should be wider, more flexible. We use adaptive techniques: for example, a battle begins - the corresponding theme turns on, more aggressive, rhythmic. But even within the same battle, it is very difficult to predict the next steps of a person - suddenly he decides to leave the battle and retreat? Or, on the contrary, will he rush into a decisive attack on superior enemy forces? The task of music here is rather to create the right emotional background than to lead the player to some specific points.
The most important difficulty for them when writing music about the Great Patriotic War is "not to sink into vulgarity and clichés":
We listen to a lot of music from those years, but copying the Soviet style one to one is also wrong. Therefore, you have to find a balance: references to the past, but in a modern sound. Soviet films help a lot: they have a special musical intonation that conveys what cannot be explained in words. But it is important to remember that we are making a game here and now. The music should be both respectful of the past and relevant to today's player.
