Crate Entertainment has confirmed that Grim Dawn 2 is in development, but the game is still in the pre-planning stage and will not be released until 2031 at the earliest, approximately six years from now.
The sequel is being created on a new proprietary engine that will improve graphics, rework game systems, and expand the set of classes, promising a significant upgrade compared to the original.
In a podcast with Chris Wilson, the creator of Path of Exile, Crate CEO Arthur Bruno stated that the team has not yet started the main work on the ARPG. The studio is currently focused on the city-builder Farthest Frontier.
According to Bruno, the RTS project helps test the engine, after which a separate version will be created for Grim Dawn 2.
"When I was working on the first part, we were limited by old technology that was outdated by then. Now we have the opportunity to create an RPG with a completely new engine and significantly improved graphics."
The developers plan to rework the game's systems, including the interaction of classes and items, to add more development options and new classes in future expansions. Despite the ambitious plans, the release remains a distant prospect — at least six years away.
