Obsidian Entertainment will remain in the memory of players thanks to the influence it had on Fallout: New Vegas. In an interview with The Game Business, studio representatives admitted that The Outer Worlds was inspired by the world of Fallout, and some even claimed that the sequel could become "the new Fallout."
Marcus Morgan, Vice President of Operations, noted that fans are constantly asking about the "next Fallout: New Vegas" at every Obsidian announcement. But the studio prefers to go its own way and develop its own intellectual universes, instead of returning to other people's franchises, as was the case with Fallout.
Even with Microsoft's control over Obsidian and Bethesda, the studio wants to remain independent. Morgan emphasized that the goal is to create RPGs in their own style, without copying other people's games. Fallout: New Vegas remains a source of inspiration, but Obsidian strives to step out of its shadow and show that it is capable of more.
"I know everyone on the internet asks when we announce every game: \"When is the next Fallout: New Vegas coming out? When is the next game?\" But this year all three games are intellectual properties created by us. Before joining Microsoft, we always worked with other people's intellectual property. And that's the pleasure we get from... how do we create our own intellectual property? And we've come to the point where we have sequels to all these games."
