Epic Games is preparing a major technology update that should open up broad opportunities for both professionals and newcomers working on their own games.
Since the era of Unreal Engine 4, the company has been moving towards simplifying processes and expanding the availability of tools for novice developers looking to create their first projects on Unreal Engine. The launch of Fortnite's creative mode, which received a separate version of the UEFN engine, was an important step for Epic Games.
Company head Tim Sweeney stated that he plans even more large-scale changes. According to him, in about two and a half years, around 2028, the audience will see the first showing of Unreal Engine 6. The new engine is designed for the next generation of systems — PlayStation 6, Xbox Prime, Nintendo Switch 2 and future models. No additional details are disclosed, except for mentioning the combination of UE5 and UEFN capabilities.
At the Unreal Fest Japan event, Sweeney noted: «Over the next two and a half years, the best elements of UE5 and the Fortnite ecosystem will merge, and the result will be the emergence of UE6».
