To deliver the game to the country, it was necessary to improvise.
Due to various restrictions, such as the depiction of Nazi symbols, the launch of Wolfenstein 3D in Germany turned out to be specific. Recently, the founder of Apogee, which published the shooter, shared his memories of working in the region.
Scott Miller told about a clever scheme — in fact, the games were entering the country "smuggled". The boxes with the game had no identifying marks (this allowed them to pass through customs):
We sent hundreds of orders directly to customers in Germany in plain packaging without the "Apogee" mailing label. We did our best not to deprive German gamers of pleasure!
Developer Sandy Petersen also shared a story — in Germany, Wolfenstein 3D could be purchased in an unexpected place:
The Germans told me that Wolfenstein was very difficult to get because it was banned due to the depiction of Nazi symbols. They said that in order to play Wolfenstein, they had to pirate it or go buy it at an adult store where porn was sold.
