Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney stated that Steam's AI usage label is no longer necessary. Valve introduced it, requiring studios to indicate the use of AI tools in development and describe the AI technologies used in detail.
Such a section has already appeared, for example, on the ARC Raiders page.
Sweeney agreed with an X user who called the system outdated.
Agreed. AI labeling makes no sense for game stores where AI will be part of nearly all future production.
According to him, such labels are more appropriate for digital art exhibitions and sites that sell images and videos.
Users pointed out that games are also considered art, and concept art, character design, and graphics may include AI, so such a label is important for understanding how the game was made. Valve initially introduced it due to concerns about copyright on AI content.
Sweeney added that if most games from 2026 onwards use AI in some way, the label will appear "everywhere." He joked:
Why stop at AI? Let's introduce mandatory disclosure of what shampoo the developer uses. Customers need to know, lol.
