AdHoc's Executive Producer and CEO Michael Chong admitted that the decision to release Dispatch in episodes was "crazy," and many advised against the idea.
From a production standpoint, no one should do it this way. If you think the episodic model alone will bring success, good luck. The foundation is creativity. If the story is strong, it can be cut in any way, and it will work.
Chong believes that the episodic structure is what made the game a viral hit. Dispatch tells the story of a hero stripped of his super-suit and forced to work in an office, assembling a team of supervillains. Each episode sparked discussions in the community and fueled interest in the game.
If we had released everything at once, the game might have been successful, but not on this scale.
He emphasized that the model only works with a strong story:
If the plot is weak, no one is interested in the episodes. But if it's good, the effect is amplified.
AdHoc is considering a second season of Dispatch.
