Critics' and viewers' opinions turned out to be almost diametrically opposed.
The second film based on Five Nights at Freddy's premiered on December 5 with extremely mixed reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the rating of "Five Nights at Freddy's 2" among critics dropped to 12% based on 68 reviews, while the first part had a score of 33%.
Viewers, on the contrary, received the sequel much more warmly. The audience rating reached 88% based on more than 500 reviews — slightly higher than the original, which received 86%.
The plot of the second part develops the events of the original and moves the action a year after the end of the first film. Mike (Josh Hutcherson), his sister Abby (Piper Rubio), and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) once again face ожившими animatronics, among which new models have appeared.
According to reviews, the film is designed exclusively for fans of the original games. It is replete with references and fan service and sometimes does a good job of expanding the universe. However, it is for this that critics scold the picture, noting that the other aspects are poorly developed. For some viewers, this was enough to justify a trip to the cinema. However, even positive responses emphasize the weak depth of the characters and the disjointed plot.
Despite the warmer reception and emphasis on fans, the starting figures were lower than expected. Universal and Blumhouse hoped to at least repeat the success of the original, but so far the results are about 30% more modest. The sequel started with $7 million, while the first part opened with $10.3 million.
