The Indie Game Awards responded to reports of developers using AI tools.
During an interview, Larian Studios mentioned that AI tools are being used in the development of the new Divinity.
This caused a wave of outrage in the community, and soon some learned that the creators of the highly anticipated Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also used artificial intelligence.
A "cancellation campaign" began, which is not limited to messages from disgruntled users on social networks.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was stripped of the "Game of the Year" and "Debut Game" awards, which it received on December 18 at The Indie Game Awards.
The organizers of the Six One Indie show released a statement and outlined their position:
The Indie Game Awards takes a firm stance against the use of generative AI both in the nomination process and during the ceremony itself. When submitting the game for consideration, representatives of Sandfall Interactive confirmed that generative AI was not used in the development of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Due to the fact that Sandfall Interactive confirmed the use of generative AI on the premiere day of the Indie Game Awards 2025, the game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is disqualified from the nominees.
After the exclusion of Expedition 33, the awards went to other projects that took second place:
- «Debut Game» — Sorry We're Closed
- «Game of the Year» — Blue Prince
