Hideo Kojima is known as a developer who regularly goes beyond the usual AAA game formats and does not follow genre templates. Despite almost 40 years of work, he still has many ideas.
A video featuring Kojima was released on the WIRED YouTube channel, where he answered questions from the community. Speaking about the next project, the developer said:
I want to be a pioneer of a new genre, so I don’t focus too much on existing ones.
He also touched upon the possible setting of the future game:
As for the setting, it might be science fiction. I love stories that take place in space, so I would like to try myself in this genre.
Then he added:
I’m also a fan of westerns, maybe something in that style. Or something costumed, but such things already exist. So I'm thinking about what to do next.
Kojima touched on the topic of genres around the sixth minute of the video. His past works have become the basis for new directions: from popularizing the stealth genre with Metal Gear to experimenting with Death Stranding.
Kojima Productions is now working on the horror game OD and the Physint project — in the spirit of "spy action". Perhaps, in the future, Kojima's new game may unfold in space or in the Wild West.
