Mark Darrah has once again spoken out about the state of the AAA industry. In his opinion, modern games are gradually preparing players for generative AI, as they have become "homogeneous" and "soulless."
On his YouTube channel, Darrah noted that the market is flooded with repetitive and overly cautious projects created "according to a template." The reason is growing budgets: "Everything becomes faceless and similar to each other," he explained.
The veteran emphasized that such costs should be the exception, not the standard. Publishers avoid risk, trying to attract as many players as possible, which leads to unification. Darrah added that games like Assassin’s Creed, Horizon, or Hogwarts Legacy, although created by different teams, repeat the same template.
"One of the reasons why players might accept generative AI is the feeling that many media have already lost their soul. The commercial filter has erased all the sharpness, soul, and spirit of the content we consume. If that's the case, why not entrust its creation to a robot?" said Darrah, clarifying that he himself does not agree with this, but "perhaps this is what is happening now."
