At CES 2026, Intel representatives named the biggest technical problem in PC gaming.

Freezes (lags or stutter) have accompanied games on PCs for many years - even on the most powerful systems.

In a conversation with Digital Foundry, Intel reported that it is working with representatives of the gaming industry to solve this problem. According to the company, lags are often associated with shader compilation. The first step was to launch a performance monitoring and telemetry system in the Intel PresentMon tool.

In recent years, one of the main sources of freezes has become Unreal Engine 5 - an extremely popular, but often poorly optimized engine, although there are successful examples of its implementation. As Digital Foundry notes in a new video, similar problems were much less common in older games than in recent releases.
