"We were real weirdos." Nier series creator opens up about the old and new industry

Yoko Taro, the eccentric creator of the NieR series, shared his thoughts on game development. He admitted that his generation consisted mainly of real weirdos.

According to the Japanese developer, this is due to the fact that in his youth, games were a niche entertainment and not part of mass culture. In the 80s and 90s, the industry primarily attracted people looking for an alternative to a traditional career. Taro considers himself to be part of this special and closed group of "outcasts" who found refuge there.

Now the situation has changed: young developers have grown up in a world where games are a normal, popular and profitable business. This naturally attracts people of a different profile.

The creator of NieR: Automata noted that the new generation of designers is more "normal" and socially adapted. Although the industry has become more professional, many veterans nostalgically remember the old, crazy times.
