PlayStation may have completely abandoned the idea of bringing its worlds to mobile format. Rumors have emerged that the company has laid off another group of developers.
One of Sony's key plans was to create a broad portfolio of games-as-a-service and simultaneously bring the largest PlayStation brands to the mobile market. Apparently, both directions will not be implemented as conceived several years ago. After problems with games-as-a-service and the cancellation of a number of projects, signals appeared that the mobile segment suffered no less.
According to the latest reports, PlayStation has once again undergone cuts. The portal MobileGamer.biz reported that "Sony has allegedly laid off about 50 employees within the Studio Business Group, including individuals associated with the PlayStation Studios Mobile division."
Moreover, one of the entries on LinkedIn even hinted that "the PlayStation mobile division may have been completely shut down." Sony has not yet given a direct answer to questions about the status of the division. The first data on the cuts at PlayStation Studios previously surfaced thanks to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, but details about the mobile segment then went unnoticed.
The situation looks ambiguous: according to MobileGamer.biz, the development of MLB The Show Mobile continues, as does Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble (available in some countries). This may mean that even with the liquidation or restructuring of the department, some games are still alive. However, Sony's ambitious plans to conquer the mobile market today look much less convincing.
