Xbox will address game exclusivity on a case-by-case basis, says Matt Booty
It was previously revealed that Gears of War: E-Day will not be released on PlayStation 5 and Switch 2.
Xbox Head of Content Matt Booty clarified Microsoft's stance on game exclusivity for Xbox consoles. According to him, in the future, the decision on whether a particular project remains a platform exclusive will be made on a case-by-case basis.
The discussion was prompted by announcements from the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, where it was confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution would be released exclusively on Xbox consoles. At the same time, other major company projects, including Halo Campaign Evolved and Fable, will also appear on PlayStation 5, which raised questions among players regarding Microsoft's overall strategy.
In an interview with Gamertag Radio, Booty spoke about the key principles that Xbox will follow when making decisions.
First of all, he emphasized that large multiplayer and service games will continue to be released on multiple platforms. According to him, the company's policy remains unchanged here.
In addition, Microsoft intends to honor previously made promises. If a game was initially announced as a multiplatform project, the company will not change course. Examples include Halo Campaign Evolved and Fable, which are still being prepared for release not only on Xbox.
As for other projects, Xbox is not going to adhere to strict rules here. Booty noted that the company strives to "make the right decisions, not quick decisions". Therefore, the issue of exclusivity will be considered separately for each game. At the same time, Microsoft plans to announce the list of platforms simultaneously with the release date of a specific project.
