Recently, the creators of the long-haul truck driver simulator American Truck Simulator presented a new dev diary dedicated to the development of the British Columbia DLC.
SCS Software published a selection of screenshots of various locations and also talked about their approach to work. Veti, one of the British Columbia map designers, explained that he works on “generic assets”:
“Assets” in game development are essentially everything that makes up the game: buildings, roads, vehicles, trees, sound effects, animations, and much more. “Generic assets” are those that can be reused multiple times in different places. These include houses, small shops, power lines, trash cans, and many other environmental elements. Their purpose is to reduce development time while maintaining the believability of the world. If every object in the game were unique, creating a map of this scale would take an incredibly long time.
British Columbia will be the first Canadian province in American Truck Simulator. Veti noted that the landscape is very different from the USA, with “mountains dominating”:
In British Columbia, you get the feeling that you are constantly surrounded [by mountains]. Although the USA also has mountainous regions, the areas I worked on before didn't have that feeling. The southern part of the province still has similarities to the American landscapes familiar to players, but the further north and deeper into the territory you go, the more “Canadian” the views become.
Veti also noted that Canadian cities are “bike-friendly” – dedicated bike lanes and infrastructure “are found everywhere and quickly become a recognizable part of the environment.”
This DLC will feature about 130 new models in cities and rural areas, as well as approximately 40 additional assets created specifically for warehouses and ferry terminals.
You can add the British Columbia DLC for American Truck Simulator to your Steam wishlist via this link. The developers have not yet announced a release date.
As usual, the frames presented in the selection are “work in progress,” meaning they do not reflect the final quality of the content.
