NetEase Canceled "Horus Heresy" MMO. Developer Claims the Game Had Potential

The multiplayer project based on Warhammer 40,000, set during the age of primarch betrayal, will not see the light of day.

The multiplayer role-playing game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, which was under development by Jackalyptic Games, has been canceled.

A former employee of the now-closed studio told IGN that the project was "shaping up nicely," but it no longer had a chance to reach release.

Development of the unnamed MMO based on the "Horus Heresy" era lasted about two and a half years. The American studio Jackalyptic Games, led by Jack Emmert, an industry veteran and creator of City of Heroes, was responsible for its creation. Initially, the studio was called Jackalope Games and was an internal team of the Chinese giant NetEase.

Last December, MP1ST published numerous concept arts of the environment for the upcoming MMO:

The project was closed due to a change in NetEase's strategy. The company ceased funding the studio as part of a large-scale reduction in investments in the Western gaming industry. As a result, Jackalyptic Games was closed at the end of 2025, and its employees were laid off. No official materials, screenshots, or gameplay of the canceled MMO have been published.
