"A Very Clever Structure": Hideo Kojima Praises New "Spider-Man" and Reflects on Franchise Challenges in the Social Media Era
The legendary game designer shared his impressions of the latest release.
Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear and Death Stranding, posted a detailed review of the film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" on social media. Judging by the length of the text, he definitely liked the movie — films that leave the game designer indifferent usually only receive a brief mention of being watched or none at all.
In the first part of his review, Kojima noted how the creators managed to effectively reboot the franchise without changing the team:
Watched "Spider-Man: Brand New Day". A lonely hero. A lonely Spider-Man. A lonely Peter Parker. It felt fresh, and I really liked it. Until now, Spider-Man movies were usually grouped into separate trilogies. With each new iteration, the cast and creative team changed, allowing the franchise to reinvent itself for a new era. This time, however, both the cast and the plot continue after the previous film, but everything has been rebooted. The film focuses on Peter, who is once again alone, and the loneliness and internal conflict that come with it.
In the second half of the review, Kojima reflected on how difficult it is to create sincere cinema under pressure from the public and social media:
"It can be perceived both as the beginning of a new series and as a direct continuation of the previous one. A very clever structure. In the age of social media and its enormous ability to amplify any opinion, finding the right balance between what filmmakers want to create and what the audience expects has become incredibly difficult. Sincere, heartfelt cinema is becoming increasingly difficult to make. Therefore, this is a film that tests the very word \"Brand\" in the title \"Brand New Day\" (Brand New Day — the original subtitle of the film, ed. note), being part of a blockbuster franchise that simply cannot afford to fail."
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has already set several box office records. The film's worldwide gross for its opening weekend reached an estimated $927 million, and in North America, the film was just $2.1 million short of the "Avengers: Endgame" record.
