The star of "Interstellar" and "True Detective" confirmed that HBO offered him the main role in the adaptation of The Last of Us.

Matthew McConaughey confirmed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he seriously considered the offer to play Joel Miller in the HBO series "The Last of Us". In the end, the actor declined the project, and the role went to Pedro Pascal.

According to McConaughey, the offer came at an inopportune time:

"Yes, I seriously considered it. But at that time, I was barely acting, mostly writing and thinking about other directions in life. The project was very good, it really interested me."

McConaughey also took into account that working on the series could stretch for several years. Unlike the self-contained story of the first season of "True Detective", the success of "The Last of Us" implied long-term participation in the project:

"When it comes to a series, you have to consider its potential success. If it works out, you'll be doing it for years. You have to ask yourself: do I really want this?"

Filming for the third season of "The Last of Us" is currently underway and is expected to conclude in November 2026. The new episodes will focus on Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. The premiere is expected in 2027; HBO has not yet announced the exact date.
