Tom King recalled that the original "Woman of Tomorrow" also started with poor sales.

The creator of the comic "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," Tom King, was pleased with how Milly Alcock embodied the rebellious character of Kara Zor-El in "Supergirl." The author was particularly impressed by the actress's performance, and he was also touched by the planet that the filmmakers named after his daughter:

"It was a joy to watch Milly Alcock's performance — how she embodied the rebellious side of the character and how brilliantly she brought her to life on screen."

Viewers and critics received "Supergirl" more coolly. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received 52% positive reviews from critics and 73% from the audience. Worldwide box office grossed approximately $125 million against a stated production budget of about $170 million.

A similar fate initially awaited the comic that formed the basis of the film. According to King, the first issues of "Woman of Tomorrow" sold poorly, and the series gained fame thanks to recommendations from readers and specialized store employees:

"This book started very humbly, and few believed in it. Even after its release, it initially sold poorly. It was supported by wonderful fans from comic book stores: they personally recommended it to visitors, talked about it, and posted messages online. Thanks to this wave of support, the book gained attention."

After its theatrical run, "Supergirl" also got a second chance on home screens. On July 28, the film became available for purchase and rental on digital platforms, and by the end of the first week, it topped the Fandango at Home chart.

Despite weak box office numbers, Milly Alcock will continue to play Kara Zor-El. Supergirl will appear in James Gunn's film "Superman," which premieres on July 9, 2027. Executive producer Lars Winter also confirmed the character's participation in another, yet unannounced DC Studios project.
