Netflix to Film Crime Action Movie Based on Stranger Than Heaven by Like a Dragon Creators

SEGA and Netflix are getting ahead of the curve, as RGG Studio's new project is not due until January 2027.

Netflix and SEGA have begun work on a live-action feature film based on Stranger Than Heaven, a new crime game from the creators of the Like a Dragon series.

Toru Nakahara, who participated in the development of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" film franchise, will produce the adaptation for SEGA. The screenwriter, director, cast, and release date have not yet been announced.

Stranger Than Heaven itself is set to be released on January 15, 2027. The game tells the story of Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American orphan who leaves San Francisco in search of a new life. The story will span five decades and several Japanese cities, from Kokura in 1915 to Shinjuku, Tokyo, in 1965. During this time, Daito will go from a penniless outsider to a dangerous yakuza and an influential figure in the entertainment industry.

How Netflix intends to fit such a lengthy story into a single feature film is currently unknown. The companies do not specify whether the adaptation will cover the entire game or focus only on a part of its plot.
