Diablo and Warcraft creator's studio in crisis. Games didn't pay off, layoffs began
The wave of layoffs continues in the gaming industry. This time, Dreamhaven, founded by Mike Morhaime, one of the creators of Blizzard, announced the cuts.
The exact number of job losses is unknown. At the end of August, management warned employees about the difficult financial situation: expenses significantly exceed income, and costs will have to be reduced to save the business.
Several games have been released under the Dreamhaven brand in recent years. In April, the company's Secret Door studio released the tactical role-playing game Sunderfolk. Judging by Steam statistics, the project did not become a hit: the maximum online was only 890 people, and yesterday evening - only 173.
The release of the cooperative Wildgate in July was more successful: 7799 players simultaneously tried the game at the start, but interest decreased over time, and now the peak online does not exceed 579.
Dreamhaven was also involved in third-party releases, but the results there were also modest. The action Lynked: Banner of the Spark started with a maximum of 296 players. Only the purchase of the autobattler Mechabellum brought the studio noticeable success: the current online record is 2602 people.
Company representatives clarified that the layoffs mainly affected the publishing division. According to them, they will not affect the support of Wildgate, Sunderfolk and the development of future games.
