Since its release, the project has been praised for its atmosphere, freedom of action, and deep world-building, but many players complain about the excessive number of climbing-related moments. But the developers claim that this was done deliberately to convey a sense of freedom and the relief of the region.

Creative Director Jason Connell explained in an interview that the studio deliberately emphasized the verticality of the landscape.

"There is an idea of freedom in this. That's why we paid so much attention to the climbing system."

The authors abandoned supernatural methods of movement in order not to destroy realism, and instead added a set of "peaceful actions" — exploration, interaction with nature and the environment.

According to Connell, the steep slopes of Hokkaido are not an obstacle, but a way to reward the player for perseverance. The ascent often leads to shrines with impressive views, and descents and slides add dynamics. Thus, the "epic verticality" of the island became a central part of the adventure, giving Ghost of Yotei a unique character.
