Dataminers have discovered lines in the Steam code describing a new controller, including pairing functions, firmware updates, and Big Picture mode support. This is the first hint of the project's return almost ten years after the release of the original model.
The first Steam Controller was discontinued in 2019. At the time, gamers considered it a bold but ambiguous experiment. Over time, interest in the device returned, and now it seems that Valve has decided to give it a second life. Judging by the findings, the company may combine ideas from the Steam Deck, including advanced controls and adaptive vibrations. Such a gamepad would be suitable not only for PC, but also for Steam Deck or VR.
The code also revealed an icon showing a new design: a D-pad and function buttons on the sides, with the analogs located closer to the center and higher than usual. In place of the sticks are two square trackpads, as in the first version. The layout matches early leaks from the founder of SteamDB.
