At the time, the developers didn't yet know how The Witcher 3's release would go.
Now many know The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, the CD Projekt RED game is very popular and has sold many copies. However, the developers did not initially expect such success.
Before the launch of "The Witcher 3," the authors feared another major project — Batman Arkham Knight. They believed that the game about the adventures of the dark knight would displace the novelty about Geralt from store shelves.
Michał Nowakowski explained in a conversation with PC Gamer:
Let's say [stores] like Gamestop have, let's say, a time window, a prime window, during which they're going to sell you the game. Two weeks for one and two weeks for the other. And that's their decision. Whether they're going to favor one game over the other is kind of their bet, and depending on the choice, it can either doom your game or elevate it to the next level. And of course, they wanted to make the right choice to sell as many copies as possible
Initially, Batman Arkham Knight was supposed to be released in the same month as The Witcher 3, the demonstration of this game impressed the developers from CDPR.
Nowakowski said:
I still remember how shocked we were when we learned that Rocksteady was releasing [Batman]: Arkham Knight — I think it was that part with the car. They were with us on one of the tours. They came to see our demo, and they also showed us theirs. It was like: "God, these guys are really on top. They're just going to run us over. It's going to be tough"
However, the release of Batman Arkham Knight was eventually postponed from May to June, and The Witcher 3 became a big hit that attracts players to this day.
