Zak Kreger abandoned his signature plot twists to create a straightforward horror film in the spirit of the original games in the series.
Zak Kreger, the director of the thrillers "Barbarian" and "Weapons," admitted that the upcoming Resident Evil film adaptation will be extremely simple in structure.
"There are no cool plot twists in the film I'm working on in Prague right now. There is no narrative acrobatics here. It’s… a pretty straightforward job. The story follows a character who just moves from point A to point B. And that’s it. It’s very refreshing for me, I can just relax and give in to the game."
For Kreger, who became famous for his ability to break narrative logic, this approach was an experiment in reverse. His previous films were built on surprises and changing perspectives, but this time, according to the director, the very spirit of the franchise suggested the form of the future film.
"There is something in the structure and pace of these games that incredibly captivates me. I have not yet seen a film that really tried to convey what these games do. I like this slowly growing sense of anxiety in which they exist by their nature. The opportunity to create a feature film with a structure close to the game... I can’t believe that no one has done this yet. It seems like such a film should have appeared a long time ago, so I’m really glad that I can now work on it."
At the same time, Kreger emphasizes that he is not abandoning complex narrative forms forever and will definitely return to them in his next project, about which nothing is yet known.
The premiere of the new Resident Evil film adaptation is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
