Former PlayStation head and gaming industry veteran Shuhei Yoshida visited WePlay Expo 2025 in China and shared his impressions of the local gaming industry. In an interview, he noted that the pace of development in China is impressive:

The speed of development in China is simply amazing. They quickly change personnel, and the development process itself is rapid.

Japanese studios are not yet able to achieve such scale and pace as Chinese projects.

When I spoke with representatives from miHoYo, we discussed how difficult it is for Japanese developers to make games the way miHoYo does. Not to mention the legal issues.

In his opinion, the strength of Chinese games is the ability to hire a large number of employees who can work for long periods of time.

Last month, HoYoverse announced Varsapura on Unreal Engine 5. Yoshida praised the project, suggesting that the company is testing how far it can go with a realistic "high-end" game, moving away from the anime style of Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail.

Other Chinese and Korean developers are releasing “games like miHoYo’s”, but miHoYo is trying to stay ahead of them.
