Sony appears to be preparing several portable devices at once.
Rumors about a portable version of the next PlayStation and an updated Sony PlayStation Portal have been circulating online for quite some time, but now newer details have emerged. Insider Kepler L2 shared fresh information about two devices at once.
According to his data, the updated PlayStation Portal may be released as early as 2026 and receive an OLED display instead of the current LCD panel. The insider does not mention significant changes to the hardware, although information had previously appeared about possible support for a 120 Hz refresh rate.
Much more interesting are the details about a full-fledged portable Sony console, which the source conditionally calls the PlayStation 6 Portable. It is claimed that the device will be built on the AMD RDNA 5 architecture — the next generation of graphics solutions from AMD. At the same time, the system is supposedly set to receive only 16 compute units, which indicates a priority on energy efficiency rather than home-console-level power.
These data fit well with previous reports that Sony is making a serious bet on power-saving modes. The technology is already being actively tested and used in a number of projects on PlayStation 5, and apparently will become a key element of the company's future portable devices.
At the same time, David Gibson, senior analyst at MST Financial, had previously noted that Sony intends to extend the PS5 lifecycle. This could shift the release of PlayStation 6 to 2029-2030. How such plans will affect the possible launch of a portable console remains unclear for now.
