Directors Makoto Shibata and Hidehiko Nakajima said in an interview that the remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly came about largely thanks to the fans.
"When we released the recent remasters, we received many requests from fans specifically asking for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly," they noted, referring to the updated versions of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water.
"The reason for releasing this project was the response to those voices," the creators added.
The developers emphasized that they paid special attention to the designs of Mio and Mayu.
We created the costumes with the original color balance and overall image in mind, trying to make the clothing so that it would not look out of place today.
The details can be examined in photo mode, where the emphasis was placed on textures and materials.
For the first time, the remake will make the game available on modern systems since its release on PS2 (2003) and Xbox (2004). The project will be released on March 12 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2. A demo version will become available on March 5. A collaboration with Konami has also been announced — the game will feature costumes inspired by Silent Hill f.
Among the changes are updated graphics, reworked gameplay, the use of the Camera Obscura in combat, and a new "Holding Hands With Mayu" mechanic that allows Mio to restore health by holding her sister's hand.
