On March 5, Slay the Spire 2 and Marathon were released. On the launch day, the developers from Mega Crit published an ironic congratulation to Bungie:
"Congratulations to the Marathon team on the launch! Don't overlook such small indie projects created with love just because Slay the Spire 2 came out."
Initially, this was perceived as a harmless joke. However, a few days later, the post took on new colors. The peak online of Slay the Spire 2 on Steam reached 526,793 simultaneous players. For comparison, the maximum figure for Marathon was 88,337 people — almost six times less.
Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano later admitted that the team did not expect such a result. According to him, because of this, the joke now "sounds harsher than intended", since the developers did not expect to surpass Bungie's shooter in the number of simultaneous players.
Against the background of the record online, Mega Crit published a new post on social networks:
"Our team is simply amazed by the number of people who are playing and sharing their love for the game we have been working on for the past five years. We will do everything possible to make Slay the Spire 2 the best game it can be! And one more obligatory joke: we'll get you someday, Silksong."
Perhaps, with this "obligatory joke," the Mega Crit team again decided to tempt fate. The peak online of Hollow Knight: Silksong at release was 587,150 players, so Slay the Spire 2 is already close to becoming one of the most popular indie games of recent years — and has every chance to compete with Team Cherry's hit.
