At the same time, Glen Schofield does not believe that AI will take bread from people.
Glen Schofield, the creator of Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol, is skeptical of claims that thanks to AI, large AAA games can be created by teams of 20 people. He noted that development requires a lot of attention to detail — from the placement of objects to camera settings — and this level of nuance is not yet achievable for automation.
However, the developer believes that ignoring new technologies is a mistake. According to him, in a few years, specialists who own AI tools will enter the market, while some artists will still refuse to use them. He drew a parallel with the introduction of motion capture technologies, which also initially caused resistance in the industry.
Schofield also emphasized that in conversations about the future of development, there is more and more talk about reducing costs and reducing teams, but creativity is hardly mentioned. At the same time, it is she who, in his opinion, remains a key element in creating games.
The developer believes that AI companies primarily create tools that can speed up the production of content — characters, animations and assets. This can increase work efficiency, but will not reduce the burden on specialists: on the contrary, teams will have the opportunity to add even more content to projects.
Separately, Schofield touched upon the cost of new technologies. He is sure that AI tools will not be free, and their implementation will require additional costs, including hiring AI specialists. As a result, despite the potential acceleration of processes, game development may not become cheaper in the short term.
