Animated film "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" grossed over $781 million worldwide
The total box office for the film franchise across two films has already exceeded $2 billion.
The animated film "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" continues its strong box office run. The film's global gross has already surpassed $781 million, with $369.8 million coming from North America and another $411.3 million from international markets.
This result solidified the franchise's success, which has crossed the $2 billion mark with just two films. The first installment, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," grossed approximately $1.35 billion and attracted about 170 million viewers, becoming one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations in history.
However, the specialized press gave "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" a lukewarm reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 43% approval rating from critics, but this had little impact on its box office performance – audience interest, fans, and the strength of the Nintendo brand were once again the main drivers of its success.
Nevertheless, the sequel's momentum is noticeably weaker than the original's. In the same three weeks, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" earned about $870 million. Industry analysts consider such a decline normal for sequels, but it can already be said that "Galactic Cinema" is unlikely to repeat or surpass the first film's result.
