The combination of predictable dangers and unpredictable adversaries makes games more interesting.

Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler shared his vision for the development of the extraction shooter genre, emphasizing that the balance between PvP and PvE is key to creating truly memorable gaming stories. According to him, it is the combination of these elements that underpins projects like Marathon and ARC Raiders, which are actively shaping the discussion around the genre today.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Ziegler noted that one of the main secrets of a "strong gaming experience" is the feeling of control and responsibility for decisions made. Players not only act but also face the consequences of their choices, learn from mistakes, and adapt to new situations. While this approach is applicable far beyond just PvPvE games, extraction shooters are particularly capable of creating intense and unpredictable scenarios.

According to the developer, PvE elements provide the foundation — a clear and predictable world with rules and logic. However, the addition of a PvP layer fundamentally changes the dynamic: other players introduce an element of chaos, forcing constant adaptation to unexpected decisions from opponents. It is this "golden mean" between PvE and PvP, Ziegler believes, that forms unique gaming experiences.

Explaining his concept, Ziegler referred to classic literature. As an example, he cited "The Lord of the Rings," where the combination of predictable dangers and unpredictable adversaries makes the heroes' journey more exciting. According to him, if Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring only encountered wildlife on their way to Mount Doom, the story would be far less tense.
