"Mortal Kombat 2" screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that Cole Young's death in the sequel is directly related to audience reaction to the first part. Lewis Tan's character, created specifically for the 2021 film, annoyed some Mortal Kombat fans from the announcement, as there was never such a hero in the games. As a result, the creators listened to fan feedback and decided to "remove" the character, while also shocking viewers who do not follow online discussions.

"I really like Lewis Tan, I think he's a great actor, but Cole is a character that hardcore fans didn't accept in the first film. They were very vocal about it and actively demanded his head."

In "Mortal Kombat 2", Cole dies during a tournament fight with Shao Kahn. His death was one of the first major losses of the film, although trailers hinted in advance that the character would have less screen time in the sequel – he hardly appeared in promotional materials.
