End of Censorship on Kickstarter - Platform Brings Back Adult Games
Kickstarter has officially lifted the strict restrictions on 18+ content that were imposed after pressure from payment partners.
Previously, Kickstarter drastically tightened its rules, prohibiting fundraising for projects with nudity and explicit sexual scenes. This primarily affected indie game developers, especially visual novels, as well as comic book authors.
Now, Kickstarter has reached an agreement with financial partners, including Stripe, on a compromise. 18+ campaigns are once again allowed, but with clear restrictions – real illegal activities are prohibited, and the emphasis is on artistic and fictional presentation.
To mitigate risks, the platform is introducing a strict tagging system. Authors are required to mark projects as NSFW themselves to prevent unwanted access from users.
However, such campaigns will not appear on the main page and will not be shown in standard search results without disabling filters in account settings.
The decision has been a relief for indie studios, for whom Kickstarter was often the only way to fund niche projects.
The platform emphasizes that the new system should strike a balance between the interests of developers, payment systems, and users.
