The horror game is still capable of causing controversy for a variety of reasons.

Recently, a dispute over Silent Hill 2 flared up again on social media. This time, the reason was not an alternative interpretation of the script, but the source of inspiration.

Again, some users began to express the opinion that Madonna should be thanked for the game's atmosphere — her music video for the song “Nothing Really Matters” (1998) allegedly “inspired” the game's atmosphere. Supporters of this version refer to a deleted post by the artist who worked on Silent Hill 2. In 2019, Masahiro Ito mentioned this video as one of his sources of inspiration.

The artist himself noticed another round of discussions online and decided to clarify the situation — he meant not the entire video, but a specific part of it with dancing:

I did say then that I was inspired by Madonna's music video for “Nothing Really Matters.” However, I was referring to the Butoh-style dances performed in the video by Asian dancers painted entirely in white, not Madonna herself or her song.

Butoh is a Japanese dance style, characterized by sharp, chaotic movements:

[This dance] was one of the inspirations for the animations of the Lying Figure, Bubble Head Nurse (BHNurse), and others. That's all. Please don't jump to conclusions.

Masahiro Ito noted that this topic had already been raised several years ago. At that time, he also explained that Butoh dance was the source of inspiration.
